Financial Holds: What You Need to Know
If you see a hold, don’t panic- you’re not alone. MC is here to help you navigate solutions! Holds are common and often resolved quickly. Act early for the most options and to stay on track. This page explains what it means and how to fix it.
A financial hold is a restriction placed on your student account when there is a balance that cannot be covered by Metropolitan College benefits or financial aid (grants, scholarships, etc.) already applied to your account.
Holds may prevent you from doing the following:
- Registering for courses for the upcoming semester
- Securing MC benefits for the upcoming semester
- Receiving transcripts from your institution
- Accessing certain institutional services until the balance is resolved
MC Students have a different registration timeline than a non-MC student. Understand the required registration timelines that your financial hold could negatively impact.
JCTC
Registration is required within the first 45 days of Early Enrollment opening:
- Summer & Fall: Opens October 1
- Spring: Opens March 1
UofL
Registration is required within the first 5 business days of Priority Registration opening:
- Summer & Fall: Opens late October
- Spring: Opens late March
- View exact dates: https://student.louisville.edu/registrar/registration/registration-information-drop-add-dates
Certain costs may fall outside MC benefits, and we’re here to help you understand them and find a resolution.
Financial holds can occur for various reasons. MC benefits do not cover the following:
- Unpaid tuition or fees (e.g., athletic fees, lab fees, eBooks, healthcare fees)
- Housing or meal plan balances
- Residence hall damages or compliance charges
- Ineligible grades (D, Withdrawal, Audit, Incomplete, No Grade, MP or Failing Grade is earned)
- Online course fees
If you are unsure why you have a financial hold, check your student account, contact your Student Success Counselor through your MyMC page, or reach out to your institution’s financial office.
Solutions are available! Depending on your situation, you may be able to take advantage of various options.
