Steps to Complete BEFORE You Graduate High School

File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Complete the 2020-2021 FAFSA by going fafsa.gov. This is the only free website to file the FAFSA. Student and parent tax information will be needed, as well as the school code for the school you will be attending (JCTC 006961, UofL 001999).

Note: Must be a U.S. citizen or federal student aid eligible non-citizen to participate in the Metropolitan College program.

Submit a New Student Application to JCTC or UofL

Jefferson Community and Technical College Application

You must have a high school diploma or GED to apply. ACT and Compass scores must meet individual program requirements.

Visit jefferson.kctcs.edu/Admissions for JCTC semester application deadlines and/or required fee information.

University of Louisville Application

To participate in MC at UofL, you must have a:

  • 3.0 cumulative high school GPA AND
  • 21 ACT/1060 SAT composite score

Beginning fall 2020, MC will consider a first-time MC student’s ACT/SAT Superscore of 21/1060 or higher if the minimum ACT/SAT composite score is not met.

Get Advised and Register for Classes

  1. Attend New Student Orientation
    1. Jefferson Community and Technical College Student Orientation, Advising and Registration (SOAR)

  2. Attend an advising appointment to receive guidance on your class selection

  3. New MC students should limit first semester enrollment to 10 credit hours or less.
  4. New MC students should advocate for late afternoon and/or evening classes that will compliment a night shift work schedule.
  5. If you have already registered, contact your academic advisor to adjust your schedule ASAP.
  6. Since you will be working year-round, plan on taking classes during the summer semester. Talk to your academic advisor about incorporating summer classes into your academic plan.
  7. Once you have demonstrated success working at nights and completing 10 credit hours, you may increase your course load to full-time.

Note: To make the adjustment to night shift and college work easier, beginning in the fall 2019 semester, students who sign their first MC agreement and adhere to part-time enrollment recommendations of enrolling in 10 credit hours or less as of your institution’s 100% drop/add date (i.e the date in which the institution allows students to drop classes with no financial responsibility), will be eligible for payment for courses and book reimbursement completed with a D grade during the first agreement semester only. Semester and milestone bonuses are excluded from this policy.

Submit a Petition for Exception to UofL/MC Requirements

Beginning April 1, you can submit a petition for an exception at https://forms.metro-college.com/petition.

When submitting your petition:

  • Provide as many details as possible that will allow the Petition Committee to make an informed decision.
  • Include that you are a STW participant.

Note: Submitting a petition does not guarantee approval.

The UofL MC Themed Community Fills Quickly. Apply Early.

This residential community provides MC students the opportunity to engage with each other and with the campus community. Hall mates with a similar schedule allow for less interrupted sleep schedules and possible carpooling opportunities. The UofL MC Themed Community fills quickly, so apply as soon as possible! Note: UofL MC Themed Community costs are not covered by MC benefits, and participants must meet MC UofL Admission requirements to participate. The application process is two steps:

  1. Complete the UofL Housing Application at https://louisville.edu/housing.
  2. Complete the MC Themed Community Application from the Student Housing portal.

Steps to Complete AFTER You Graduate High School

You Will Transfer to Nights to Participate in MC

STW mentors will gather each student’s education plans after graduation. Students interested in the Metropolitan College program will transfer to nights after high school graduation. The goal is to have all students transferred to nights by mid-July to give students time to adjust to their new work schedule before fall semester classes begin.

Complete Employment Verification to Confirm Eligibility to Receive MC Benefits

After you have transferred to nights at UPS and worked on this shift for two weeks, complete the Employment Verification form. This form will help us to verify your new employment status, and get some basic information from you. Once verified, you will receive you will receive an email to complete the Student Transition Program (STP).

Complete the Student Transition Program (STP)

New MC students must complete the STP, which is a series of online modules that provide program information and campus resources.

  • Log in to My MC. (Access to the MyMC Page is granted after employment verification is complete)
  • Select “STP” under the CAPP Requirements section.
  • You will need to complete each online module, being sure to screenshot the TypeFocus Assessment Results report, the High Five Financial Basics Completion Page, and the STP Confirmation Page to provide to an MC Counselor for first student agreement.

Note: If you completed the STP Module prior to May 1, 2020, you will need to complete the newly added Student Agreement module on MyMC page via STP section. This module will take approximately 20 minutes to complete.

Schedule Appointment to Sign Your First MC Student Agreement

You must be working on nights for 2 weeks prior to scheduling an appointment to sign your first agreement. All checklist items must be complete to sign your student agreement.

Develop a Plan to Pay Fees and/or Uncovered Tuition Costs

When you register for classes, you are responsible for the tuition bill at JCTC or UofL. It is important that you know the tuition deadline when you register for classes.

Sign your student agreement and pay fees* and/or uncovered tuition costs** on or before your school's payment deadline to avoid late charges and/or dropped classes.

*Fees not covered by MC include, but are not limited to housing, student recreation fee, meal plan, health fee, course fees, lab fees, Build Smart Fees, parking fees, etc

*Tuition costs not covered by MC include, but are not limited to: All or a part of UofL on-line course tuition, undergraduate tuition which is charged at a rate higher than the in-state per credit hour course fee, etc.
